A cultural institution in a melting pot of cultures, the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research takes a strategic and rational approach to addressing today and tomorrow’s pivotal and pressing issues, as well as placing a premium on rigorous discipline in the triumph of academic and scientific enterprise. Located in Abu Dhabi, the ECSS enjoys local, regional, and international success. Reem Fairooz Alkendi is Library Specialist for the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. His position allows him to wield his expertise at ensuring all library information is updated and cutting edge. Mr. Alkendi’s duties cover an area that runs the gamut from the overseeing of staff to performing complex reclassification and copy cataloging.
Established in 1994 the Center’s strategic plan encompasses projects and activities considerably beyond what currently exists. Still, its influence and impact have caught the attention of many due to its enduring and deep-rooted contributions to the country’s development. The UAE Federation Library is one of ECSSR’s prized assets. Its specialized holdings are in economic, political and social science materials. The library is primarily focused on acquiring knowledge relevant to the UAE in particular and the Gulf region in general.
Last year Mr. Alkendi received his M.B.A. from Zayed University. He also obtained a Bachelors of Science at this university. Zayed University was established in 1998 and named in honor of the founder of the nation and is already world renown for its academic excellence. How important are our origins, our roots? Do they become weaker or stronger the farther back they go? Fire is the origin of stone; does the stone still feel the fire deep down in its core? Gladys Mouro is American born, a Pawtucketer, a Rhode Islander, with a mother who is originally Lebanese. Ms. Mouro visited Lebanon with her mother when she was a young girl. The thrill of going to her mother’s homeland didn’t leave her after her visit ended, so at 17 she made the decision she would study nursing in Lebanon. Gladys is a woman of intense focus. She sees with clarity what she wants. She sees with clarity what is needed to obtain it, and though the world may be falling apart around her, she will see her goals through to completion. In June 1976, Mouro received her BS in Nursing from the American University of Beirut; but, because of the war, there was no usual cap and gown regalia and commencement ceremony. Later she was awarded an AUB grant to pursue an MSN at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, she received an Honorary Doctorate Degree for Human Leters from Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania. On returning to Beirut, degree in hand, she was appointed Director of Nursing Services. Her early career almost exactly coincided with the Lebanese Civil War, which began in 1975 and ended in 1990.
Since the hospital was located in a part of western Beirut that was in the thick of the fighting and was better equipped than any other hospital in Beirut to treat the wounded, this placed Ms. Mouro at ground zero of a conflict that killed 150,000 people, wounded hundreds of thousands of others, and made the hospital itself a frequent target for the contending sectarian militias. Ms. Mouro wrote a book about her experiences, An American Nurse Amidst Chaos. The book describes how the war made the medical center in effect not only a field hospital, but also a target. Wards and clinics were blasted by artillery shells. Car bombs exploded outside the entrance and in the parking lot. A woman suicide bomber waiting with a chocolate box on her lap killed seven people in the hospital lobby. Patients pulled guns on hospital staff from under pillows. Overstressed nurses committed suicide. Heavily armed militiamen rushed through the hospital ordering doctors and nurses to attend first to their wounded comrades, fighting gun battles in the corridors, and shooting rivals dead in the wards.
In 1994, the Lebanese Government awarded her the Silver Order of Health. And in 1995, she was appointed to the position of Assistant Hospital Director for Nursing Services of the Medical Center. In April 2003, Ms. Mouro addressed an audience of 2,000 American nurse executives gathered at the conference of the American Organization of Nurse Executives that was held in New Orleans. Speaking to them at length on her experiences in leadership during and after the war, she received a five-minute standing ovation and was honored with the organization’s Nurse Executive Award for the U.S. “It was a magical moment,” she says, “truly the most memorable event of my life. From the Ministry of Health she received an award for her achievements in Patient Care and Nursing in Lebanon. This was one of two awards she received from the Ministry of Health. The second award came this year when she won the 2010 Ministry of Health Award for promoting the practice of Nursing in the country after achieving Magnet Designation, the first hospital in the Middle East to do so. A Magnet hospital is one that has met the specific standards set forth by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). These standards define the highest quality of nursing practice and patient care. She has been appointed as Magnet Commissioner for the Middle East. She is a Madison Who’s Who Woman of the Year, and she has been selected in the Who’s Who of Lebanon as Woman of the Year.
Understandably, Mouro has no time for hobbies, but she swims and religiously exercises at a gym four times a week. She maintains the spirit of an adventuress and loves to travel. On the subject of family she has her mother and two brothers, about the rest she says, ”Now, I look back sometimes, see how I missed out on the opportunity to get married and have a family, perhaps to advance my career or make a little more money elsewhere, and I ask, ‘Did I do the right thing? But then I remember what we achieved here, and I know with certainty that if the same situation arose again, I’d be the first to volunteer.”
As for how she feels about her impressive performance as a nurse who rose through the ranks to reach the top, she says: “I am proud of being persistent, determined and passionate in my drive to achieve the highest level of excellence at the institution I have devoted my entire career and life to. It is a dream come true.”

“Do not let yourself be tainted with a barren skepticism.” commands Louis Pasteur.
Good advice for scientists, artists, or anyone. Skepticism is a big old red stop sign in the center of a field of yellow yield signs. Dr. Guillermo Whittembury has remained untainted by Pasteur’s foe and he has ventured forward in his profession. He is active Senior Researcher Emeritus at Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas (IVIC), in Caracas, Venezuela. IVIC is a government supported institution and functions as a leading Latin American institute for general sciences. The Institute offers courses in many of the major sciences including physics, immunology, mathematics, microbiology, chemistry, and many others. Since its inception, the IVIC has been a fundamental scientific research center of the country, and it acts as an important generator of knowledge in vital areas for the scientific, social, economic, political and cultural life of Venezuela. Dr. Whittembury has been with IVIC since 1962, when he began his career as a Junior Investigator, a position he held until 1966. He was promoted to the position of Senior Investigator from 1966 to 1980, before coming into his present position of Senior Researcher Emeritus. Furthermore he has participated in visiting professorships in The USA, UK and Germany. At one point Dr. Whittembury was a Scientific Attaché at the Peruvian Embassy in Venezuela.
The doctor’s research on epithelial cells in the kidney has played a key role in various worldwide studies researching effective means of kidney transplantation. Dr. Whittembury is the co-author of many publications: including Renal Reabsorption of Water. Are There Pores in Proximal Tubule Cells? He is a frequent lecturer and organizer of symposiums, such as “New Insights in Water Transport Across Cells and Membranes: Structure, Function and Regulation” was held at the “Instituto de Biologia y Medicina Experimental” in Buenos Aires, Argentina in May 2002 and he co-organized with Claudia Capurro from the University of Buenos Aires. Dr. Whittembury has been the recipient of the Daniel Carrion Prize for Culture, Peru; and the Andrés Bello Order 1st class, which is Venezuela’s most prestigious civilian award. He is Co-Chancellor of the Latin American Academy of Sciences, Biophysical Society. He holds memberships in many professional organizations such as: American Society of Nephrology, International Society of Nephrology, and the Venezuelan and Peruvian Societies of Nephrology. Nephrology concerns the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases. Dr. Whittembury studied at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, (UPCH) where he earned his Doctorate in Medical Science, and he went to Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, (UNMSM) at which he received his M.D. and his Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine.
Dr. Whittembury’s home life is as fulfilling as his career. He has been married to Dorothy Hauswedell for 47 years and they have three children: Guillermo, Ana Maria, and Roberto. As their children are adults, Guillermo and Dorothy are also the grandparents of six.

We arrive at the spot where France, Germany, and Switzerland touch noses, otherwise known as Basel, Switzerland. We are at this spot because we are making our way to the University of Basel/Université Basel/Universität Basel to meet Paul Walter, Ph.D. Dr. Walter is the Dean of Medical Faculty and a Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Nutrition at this University. The University of Basel is the oldest university in Switzerland as it was founded in 1460 upon the initiative of its local citizens. This venerable institution is located at the heart of town. The heart of the University is found in the spirit and merit of Dr. Walter’s research and teachings.
Prior to Dr. Walter’s Emeritus status, he served for 25 years as a full professor of Biochemistry and Nutrition at the Medical School. He was also the Director of the Swiss Vitamin Institute. This Institute was founded in 1931 and maintains a key position in the analysis of vitamins in food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. In the last 10 years the Institute has extended its services to the analysis of biological samples.
There are other institutions of higher education in Dr. Walter’s history. At the point in time when Paul Walter, Ph.D. was a student, he received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the ETH in Zurich, (The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich). This university regularly appears at the top of international rankings as one of the best universities in the world. 21 Nobel Laureates have studied, taught or conducted research at ETH Zurich, underlining the excellent reputation of the institute. Dr. Walter then spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts and after that he moved on to the Institute of Enzymology of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He stayed there for five years, the final two years as an assistant professor. He continued his career for 8 years at the University of Bern in Switzerland where he war promoted to an associate professor for biochemistry before moving to Basel.
Another aspect of his career exists in the publishing world. His more than 150 publications are mainly in the field of carbohydrate and energy metabolism as well as on vitamins and biologically active plant constituents. He was chief-editor of the International Journal of Vitamin and Nutrition Research for 11 years. He is active as reviewer of different journals and a co-author of the Reference Values for Nutrient Intake issued by the nutrition societies of Austria Germany and Switzerland.
He was the president of the Swiss Academy of Sciences and the European Academy of Nutritional Sciences. He has served for many years as the President of the Swiss Society of Biochemistry, the Swiss Union of Experimental Biology. In December of 2005 Professor Walter became the President of The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI), Europe. ILSI is a non-profit, worldwide foundation established in 1978 to advance the understanding of scientific issues relating to nutrition, food safety, toxicology, risk assessment and the environment. By bringing together scientists from academia, government, industry and the public sector, ILSI seeks a balanced approach to solving problems of common concern for the wellbeing of the general public.
The professor has a full and happy home life. He is married with two children. Music is a necessity; Dr. Walter especially enjoys the piano.

When you think of Senior Editors in the publishing field, it’s hard not to recall all the great no-nonsense, non compromising seekers of truth that Hollywood has given us. An editor can be suave yet exasperating like Cary Grant was in His Girl Friday or the gruff careful skeptic based on The Washington Post’s Ben Bradlee played by Jason Robards in All the President’s Men. These two examples come from a well stocked medley of a category. Senior Editors must be an inspiring lot. Ahlert Hysing is Senior Editor for IDG (International Data Group) in Norway. IDG Magazines Norway is the publisher of: Computer World, PC World, Network & Communications, and MacWorld. Mr. Hysing has a regular column in Computer World, Norway. In addition, he is responsible for administration, writing, designing and distribution. He does what he can to ensure that the highest quality publications are created. IDG informs more people about technology than any other media company. This outfit is the world’s leading technology media, events, and research company. Since its founding in 1964, IDG has been committed to helping people acquire and use technology successfully. As a result, IDG brands have become the trusted source for advice on and insight into technology news and trends around the world. IDG’s diverse products and services portfolio spans six key areas: online media, events and conferences, print publishing, lead-generation services, global marketing solutions and market research.
Mr. Hysing is an established computer specialist with a focus on software and teaching. As a student he traveled to America and studied at Purdue University School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, where he received his Bachelors of Science and Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering. As a professional he has remarked on education in his column in Computer World. A commentary of his appeared near the beginning of the school year, in it he opined that the study of business processes should be mandatory curriculum for students interested in financial education. Education is just one of many topics he illuminates in his column. In a more recent piece he wished to rouse concern so that more proactive procedures would be put into place and make the internet more secure. Mr. Hysing is rousing in person also and is a popular lecturer.

To start off ‘law’ starts off Lawrence N. Lavigne’s name. Now not all those named Lawrence end up becoming lawyers, but for those that do the law must have an extra heft to its meaning and sense of duty. Lawrence N. Lavigne is the founder of his own practice, Lawrence N. Lavigne Esq. L.L.C. – Attorney at Law. His devotes his practice to products liability defense, employment litigation, general labor matters, lemon law defense, insurance coverage, commercial transactions and commercial litigation. He is certified as a civil trial attorney by the New Jersey Supreme Court. For the past twenty six years, Larry has been conducting trials and appeals in both state and federal courts in products liability, insurance litigation (including environmental matters, toxic tort and consumer fraud), commercial and corporate litigation, labor & employment, lemon law, franchise matters, breach of warranty, consumer fraud and similar matters. He has also been involved in the defense of a number of class action suits and has handled a variety of matters before various regulatory boards in the state and federal systems. Larry also counsels corporate clients in a variety of areas. He has assisted manufacturing clients in preparing warnings, warranties and owner’s manuals for various products. Larry has been involved in representing clients with matters in China and Hong Kong.
In 2007 Mr. Lavigne took on a case where a local small business was being crushed by two super powers. In this case he represented the company, Foreign Tire Sales of Union, N.J when federal officials told the small New Jersey importer that it must recall 450, 000 radial tires made for pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans after the company disclosed that its Chinese manufacturer had stopped including a safety feature that prevented the tires from separating. The manufacturer admitted in September 2006 that it had “unilaterally decided to omit the gum strips” in the tires, the official report says. Foreign Tire Sales, which has just thirteen employees, imports tires and then sells them to domestic distributors. Mr. Lavigne said the company did not physically handle the tires. The company began negotiating with the manufacturer back in 2000 to design and manufacture radial tires for light trucks. The tires were supposed to exceed federal safety standards, partly by including a gum strip between the plies to prevent separation, and ultimately passed a road test in which they were driven 40,000 miles. Mr. Lavigne said it appeared that the manufacturer at times used no gum strips on the tires and in other instances, used half the amount of gum strip that was required by its agreement with the company. Larry coordinated the government mandated recall of the tires and negotiated an amicable resolution of the dispute with the manufacturer.
Further back in Mr. Lavigne’s history, we see that he studied at Franklin and Marshall College where he received his Bachelors Degree in History. He went on to study law at Seton Hall University and obtained his Juris Doctorate. He is also a Certified Trial Attorney. Mr. Lavigne hold’s memberships in several notable professional associations such as: New Jersey State Bar Association, (Products Liability Section); Somerset County Bar Association; American Bar Association, (Automotive Liability Committee, Litigation Section; Torts and Insurance Practice Section); New Jersey Trial Lawyers Association; Association of Trial Lawyers of America; New Jersey Defense Association; Defense Research Institute.
Outside the courtroom and his office, Mr. Lavigne knows how to make the best of his free time. He plays guitar and has an interest in wine collecting. He is a football fan. Also he likes to expand the boundaries of his mind and horizons with pursuing his interests in psychology, computer technology, and traveling. On the subject of traveling, France holds a particular charm for Mr. Lavigne.

William Butler Yeats said, “Education is not the filling of a bucket but the lighting of a fire.” So, teachers and administrators of education are pyromaniacs of a sort, the inspirational and safe sort. In the London area at Middlesex University there is a fire starter by the name of Gillian Hilton. She is the Head of the Department of Education at Middlesex University. In this position Dr. Hilton shows her savvy at the administration of the academic staff and directors, as well as teacher development. Dr. Hilton is never swayed from her purpose in teaching teachers. Teachers that will go on to have a positive impact on students from the primary school level to the secondary level. Dr. Hilton is also the Academic Group Chair.
Middlesex University is a large London university, with two additional campuses overseas, in Dubai and in Mauritius. This university’s history in higher education dates from 1878 and in 1992 when it was granted the royal charter. The campuses of the university offer a broad range of courses through their four academic schools of Arts and Education, Business, Engineering and Information Sciences, Health and Social Sciences and our Institute for Work Based Learning.
As a student herself, Gillian accumulated an alphabet of degrees: Ph.D., MA Ed., Ac. Dip., Ed Cert. Ed.. The last two are specific to the United Kingdom as a professional qualification for teachers. She is affiliated with the Teachers Development Agency, the Quality Assurance Agency, and the Association for Teacher Education in Europe.
Hertfordshire, England is where Dr. Hilton’s home and heart is. A town rife with history whose name Hertford is derived from the Anglo-Saxon heort ford, meaning deer crossing (of a watercourse). Deer feature prominently in many county emblems. Gillian Hilton enjoys taking in her surroundings during her neighborhood walks. She loves to sing and is a member of a local choir.
